Solid building structures made from natural stone for a sustainable future

Sustainable building is an important topic worldwide, since the building sector is respon-sible for approx. 38 % of global CO2 emissions. The way in which we construct buildings nowadays protects neither resources nor the environment. In order to reduce the ecologi-cal footprint in the building sector, it is therefore essential to put the focus of the architec-ture back onto natural building materials!

Stone+tec 2024 trade fair congress in Nuremberg:

  • Wednesday, 19th June, 10:45 to 16:45, followed by presentation of the German Natural Stone Award
  • Thursday, 20th June, 10:45 to 12:30

Natural stone has been used as a building material for millennia in order to create long-lasting structures. However, in the last century, the era of an apparently endless supply of fossil energy, natural stone was replaced by energy-intensive, artificial building materials, and it is therefore now no longer load-bearing, but is mainly only used for “decorative” purposes. However, this is not the way to exploit the full potential of natural stone. On the contrary, as a load-bearing building material it is a real alternative to the currently used CO2-intensive artificial materials, and is therefore suitable for the decarbonisation of the building sector that is needed. The international Stone+tec specialist trade fair (19th-22nd June, Nuremberg Trade Fair) is therefore devoting one and a half days of the congress to this highly topical subject, and has succeeded in bringing in some high-ranking speakers, some of whom are from abroad. A translation of the lectures that are taking place in English will be available.

High-ranking programme of lectures

Both days of the congress will start with a welcome by Hermann Graser, the President of the German Natural Stone Association.

The lectures will then deal with the excellent ecological footprint of natural stone, which can be explained on the one hand using EPD’s (Environmental Product Declarations). On the other hand, the lecturers will be showing the major potential of natural stone for the energy-related transformation of the building sector on projects which have already been implemented in Europe, where it is being used for bearing loads again and in conjunction with other natural materials. Finally, the focus will be on the design of different finishes in interior architecture and the use of natural stone in free surface design, whereby the lectures will deal with the use of natural stone in architecture, particularly in house-building, interior design and in garden and landscape architecture from the point of view of the architects and engineers.

The first day of the congress will end with the presentation of the 2024 German Natural Stone Award.

Stone+tec Nuremberg 2024

The Stone+tec specialist trade fair is taking place from 19th to 22nd June in the Nuremberg trade Fair, and is intended for all specialists from the building, cemetery, monument and design sectors and also architects, planners and property developers. Stone+tec will also be accompanied by a three-day congress (19th to 21st June). On Wednesday and Thursday the focus will be on technical information and training of architects, engineers, planners and property developers. It will also be possible to have participation in the Stone+tec Congress accepted as further education by the architec-tural and engineering associations.

On Friday, 21st June, the congress will be concentrating on information for stonemasons and cemetery administrators. Further information and the complete programme can be found here:
